Care Support Worker Job Description

  • Title: Carer Support Worker
  • Employed by: MSC Home care Ltd
  • Responsible to: Care Manager

Description of role: To provide help for and relieve stress on for the Carer of a person with a disability living in their own home, in order to prevent a breakdown in care or to a person with a disability who may live alone but has a Carer. To provide personal, social and domestic care similar to that given by the Carer, as advised by the Care Manager respecting confidentiality at all times.

Principal Tasks

Family and individual related tasks:

Attend the homes of families/individuals and perform tasks as specified by the Care Manager.
Take note of the directions and requests of both the person with a disability and the Carer, and wherever possible perform the duties consistent with their own wishes.
To provide community support

Personal and social care tasks:

  • Bathing in bed/bathroom/chair to include essential aspects of personal hygiene.
  • Assist in the management of continence.
  • Assist with dressing and undressing.
  • Assist with mobility and transfers, using correctly the specialised equipment provided.
  • Administer the medication as prescribed by a qualified Medical Practitioner forhat person, under the direction of the Carer and the Care Manager adhering, at all times, to MSC Home care Medication and Personal Care Policies.
  • Assist with therapeutic programmes designed, under medical direction to help an individual’s progress, as advised by the relevant professional and under the direction of the Carer and Care Manager.
  • Provide a safe environment for those who need constant supervision and help.
  • Provide emotional support to the family as part of a caring team.
  • Escort the person with a disability outside the home as advised by the Care Manager with written permission from the disabled person or responsible Carer

Domestic tasks:

  • Some light domestic duties may be carried out
  • Making and changing the disabled person’s bed.
  • Essential laundering for the disabled person.
  • Preparing meals and washing up.

If requested essential shopping may be done (receipts will be obtained for all purchases).

Administration and Training

In order to fulfil our commitment to quality you will be required to:

  • Notify the Care Manager immediately of any changes in availability to work.
  • Observe and report back promptly any alteration in the family circumstances affecting the service provision.
  • Liaise regularly with the Care Manager and colleagues.
  • Provide flexible cover for colleagues in the event of holiday and sickness, as part of a caring team.
  • Participate at regular team and supervision meetings as convened by the Care Manager.
  • Complete and submit to the Care Manager signed time sheets and expenses.
  • Complete incident forms accurately and submit promptly to the Care Manager.
  • Participate in an induction programme and attend ongoing training as requested in order to maintain and improve your professional practise.

Person Specification

Essential requirements:

  • Empathy with carers and those receiving care.
  • Good listening skills and sensitivity in giving emotional support.
  • An ability to communicate with people from all backgrounds in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to give physical and personal care to the disabled person, for example: toileting, washing and feeding.
  • Willingness to help with domestic duties, including cooking when required.
  • Ability to build relationships with the families/individuals and help them to maintain their social links.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Respect for confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to be directed by and respond to the wishes of the carers and those receiving care.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, using own initiative and reporting back to the Manager and observations affecting the family or individuals circumstances.
  • Good general health and willing to undergo a medical examination, if required.
  • Availability of own car.
  • To attend all Health & Safety training (mandatory)
